Accessibility

The New Mexico History Museum believes that New Mexico’s history is for everyone and seeks to make museum spaces, exhibitions, and programs accessible for visitors of all abilities. 

Wheelchair Access

A limited number of wheelchairs are available for use. Please inquire at the front desk upon your arrival. (Secured with an ID)

Motorized wheelchairs are permitted. 

Museum Seating

Seating is available for use throughout the Museum.

Elevators

Elevators are available for access to our second floor, mezzanine, and lower-level exhibitions from the main lobby. A ramp to the upper lobby is available on the main floor for access outside to the Palace of the Governors. For questions or assistance, please inquire with the front desk or Museum Security Staff.

Power Assist Doors

Power assist entrance doors are located at the west entrance of the Museum located at 113 Lincoln Street. Due to historic preservation requirements, power assist doors for the Palace of the Governors are only available at the northeast exhibit “Palace through Time”.

Accessible restrooms are located on the main level past the Gift Shop and on the second floor east of the atrium.

Parking

Metered street parking is available on Lincoln Street in front of the Museum on a first-come first-served basis; persons who display accessible registration plates or valid placards may park without charge at any parking meter around the Plaza.

Service Animals

Trained service animals are welcome at the Museum. Pets and emotional support animals are not permitted. For more information, see the Service Animal Overview from the New Mexico Governor’s Commission on Disability.

Services Available Upon Request

If auxiliary aids and services for effective communication (such as a sign language interpreter, an assistive listening device or print material in digital format) or reasonable modification to programs, services or activities, contact the DCA ADA Coordinator as soon as possible, preferably 3 days before the activity or event.

Website

The museum is working to implement digital accessibility standards for the usability of its website by all people with disabilities. These efforts are ongoing.
