Dive Deep Into New Mexico History!
Who were the groups, people, places, and events that shaped New Mexico? Students can answer these questions in the classroom or on a visit to the museum using the timeline worksheet. Students select objects/topics that interest them (such as a lowrider, a genre of music, or a local historical site), place them on the timeline, and draw connections to the people and events of the past.
The Worksheet is aligned with New Mexico Social Studies and English Language Arts Common Core State Standards and are available for different ages in English and Spanish.
Introduce students to the Timeline Worksheets using the Human Timeline Activity for 3rd grade and 4th grade and older. Please email us feedback and pictures at NMHM.Education@dca.nm.gov if you try this activity in your classroom!

3rd Grade and Younger
Younger students can use the Worksheet to explore New Mexico history in the classroom with a History Treasure Hunt following these steps:
- Print these photos (link to PDF coming soon), place them around the room and ask students go on a “gallery walk”.
- As they look at the photos, show where the object name and date is located on the page.
- Gather the students together near one photo and show them how the timeline has 5 periods and each has a date range. Show how to locate the date of an object and put it in the correct period column. Next demonstrate filling out the prompts in each row.
- Have students choose one object for each column to fill out the full sheet.
- Take a movement break and ask students to move like one of the objects they choose.
- Sit in a circle and have students share one item they chose and why they like it.
