This collection of photographs by photographer Carl Moon documents Native Americans living in Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma between 1904 and 1917. It includes … the pick of the Fred Harvey collection that I made for them during the period of my contract with them, 1907 to 1914, and my own collection made since the latter date." ... Almost all of the photographs are signed "Karl Moon" – his name until 1918, when he changed the spelling to Carl. Many of the prints are also stamped "copyright Fred Harvey" which indicates they were made while Moon was under contract there, 1907-1914. Moon also copyrighted many of his own works, and a dated copyright stamp is embossed in the prints. The copyright date does not always indicate the year the photograph was made – it could be several years later.

Midwest-MS-Teich Co.
5000 Linear Feet (size approximate and subject to change)
The Curt Teich Postcard Archives Collection is the nation’s largest public collection of postcards and related materials. The core collection in the Teich Archives, acquired by the Lake County Discovery Museum in 1982 and subsequently transferred to the Newberry in 2016, is the industrial archives of the Curt Teich Company of Chicago, which operated from 1898 to 1978 as the world’s largest printer of view and advertising postcards. The Teich Company saved examples of nearly every image printed, as well as company records and the original production materials for each card. The core collection consists of over 360,000 images, from 1898 to 1978, relating to more than 10,000 towns and cities primarily in the United States and Canada, and more than 115 other foreign countries. Original production materials exist for about 110,000 postcards, dating from 1926 to approximately 1960, including photographic prints and negatives; letters; pencil and watercolor sketches; other layout materials; and physical remnants such as wallpaper, flooring and textiles, which had been sent to the Teich Company to serve as color and pattern samples.

The Fred Harvey Co. materials are a subset of the items contained in the U.S. West: Photographs, Manuscripts, and Imprints digital collection, focusing on promotional booklets, postcards, and ephemera that used Native North American imagery to promote travel to the Southwest. The materials were published between 1901, when the Fred Harvey Indian Department first opened, and 1930, when the Indian Detours business was sold. These materials encouraged travel to the Southwest, increasing demands for souvenirs in the form of blankets, pottery, and jewelry on display at Harvey locations.
